Intended Use

The Triathlon® Pro PS Femoral Components are intended for cemented use only.

Device Story

Triathlon® Pro PS Femoral Component is a line extension to the Triathlon® Total Knee System; used in total knee arthroplasty to replace damaged knee joint surfaces. Device is a sterile, single-use Cobalt-Chromium alloy femoral component; implanted by orthopedic surgeons in a clinical/OR setting. Functions as a semi-constrained cemented prosthesis to restore joint stability and function in patients with degenerative or traumatic knee disease. Provides mechanical articulation with tibial components; addresses ligamentous instability and posterior cruciate ligament deficiency. Benefits include pain relief and restoration of knee joint configuration. Substantial equivalence established via non-clinical bench testing, including fatigue, wear, and contact stress analysis.

Technological Characteristics

Cobalt-Chromium alloy femoral component manufactured via low-pressure metal injection molding (ASTM F2886-17). Semi-constrained cemented prosthesis. Available in sizes 1-8, left/right configurations. Sterile, single-use. Evaluated for MR compatibility (ASTM F2052-15, F2213-17, F2119-07, F2182-19e2).

Indications for Use

Indicated for patients with painful, disabling knee joint disease (osteoarthritis, traumatic arthritis, avascular necrosis, rheumatoid arthritis, post-traumatic arthritis), post-traumatic loss of function, moderate varus/valgus/flexion deformity, revision of failed knee replacement, or distal femur/proximal tibia fractures. PS components specifically indicated for ligamentous instability, absent/non-functioning posterior cruciate ligament, or severe anteroposterior instability. Intended for cemented use only.

A knee joint patellofemorotibial polymer/metal/polymer semi-constrained cemented prosthesis is a device intended to be implanted to replace a knee joint. The device limits translation and rotation in one or more planes via the geometry of its articulating surfaces. It has no linkage across-the-joint. This generic type of device includes prostheses that have a femoral component made of alloys, such as cobalt-chromium-molybdenum, and a tibial component or components and a retropatellar resurfacing component made of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene. This generic type of device is limited to those prostheses intended for use with bone cement (§ 888.3027).

The femoral component is manufactured from Cobalt-Chromium alloy, which meets ASTM material standard F2886-17 as well as F75-18 standard requirements in its final finished form.
