Device Story
Dr.pen Microneedling System is a minimally invasive, powered microneedling device. It consists of a reusable pen body, a sterile single-use microneedling cartridge with 14 stainless steel needles, a power adapter, and a disposable protective sleeve. The device operates by mechanically creating microscopic punctures in the epidermal and dermal layers of the skin via a reciprocating cartridge head. The user adjusts the needle penetration depth (up to 2.0 mm) and activates the device using an On/Off button. It is intended for use by clinicians to treat facial acne scars. The device uses a microprocessor and embedded software to control motor speed and puncture rate (105-128 stamps/second). The healthcare provider uses the device to perform controlled skin injury, which is intended to improve the appearance of acne scars.
Clinical Evidence
Bench testing only. Testing included motor speed/puncture rate, needle penetration accuracy, needle bonding strength, use/cartridge life, anti-suction, and microbial ingress. Biocompatibility testing (ISO 10993) confirmed the cartridge is biocompatible. Electrical safety and EMC testing performed per IEC 60601-1 and IEC 60601-1-2.
Indicated for adults aged 22 years and older for the treatment to improve the appearance of facial acne scars.

Identification
A microneedling device for aesthetic use is a device using one or more needles to mechanically puncture and injure skin tissue for aesthetic use. This classification does not include devices intended for transdermal delivery of topical products such as cosmetics, drugs, or biologics.
Special Controls
The technical specifications and needle characteristics must be identified, including needle length, geometry, maximum penetration depth, and puncture rate. Non-clinical performance data must demonstrate that the device performs as intended under anticipated conditions of use. The following performance characteristics must be tested: (i) Accuracy of needle penetration depth and puncture rate; (ii) Safety features built into the device to protect against cross-contamination, including fluid ingress protection; and (iii) Identification of the maximum safe needle penetration depth for the device for the labeled indications for use. Performance data must demonstrate the sterility of the patient-contacting components of the device. Performance data must support the shelf life of the device by demonstrating continued sterility, package integrity, and device functionality over the intended shelf life. Performance data must demonstrate the electrical safety and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) of all electrical components of the device. Software verification, validation, and hazard analysis must be performed for all software components of the device. The patient-contacting components of the device must be demonstrated to be biocompatible. Performance data must validate the cleaning and disinfection instructions for reusable components of the device. Labeling must include the following: (i) Information on how to operate the device and its components and the typical course of treatment; (ii) A summary of the device technical parameters, including needle length, needle geometry, maximum penetration depth, and puncture rate; (iii) Validated methods and instructions for reprocessing of any reusable components: (iv) Disposal instructions; and (v) Shelf life. Patient labeling must be provided and must include: (i) Information on how the device operates and the typical course of treatment; (ii) The probable risks and benefits associated with use of the device; and (iii) Post-operative care instructions.
*Classification.* Class II (special controls). The special controls for this device are:(1) The technical specifications and needle characteristics must be identified, including needle length, geometry, maximum penetration depth, and puncture rate.
(2) Non-clinical performance data must demonstrate that the device performs as intended under anticipated conditions of use. The following performance characteristics must be tested:

Discussion': the reference device (Eclipse MicroPen EVO, K203114) has included to support that the subject device is the same as the reference device and state substantial equivalence to the a legally marketed device.
Discussion2: subject device has a slightly larger total surface area of the hub. No affect to geometry, puncture pattern, needle stamp.
Discussion3: not significant difference; treatment depth is 1.5 mm for both devices.
### Substantial Equivalence:
Dr.pen Microneedling System is substantially equivalent to the Bellus Medical SkinPer® Precision System predicate device. The devices are under the same product code (QAI), both have the same indication for use, same number of needles, gauge, shape and arrangement, same material, recommended peneth, speed, puncture rate and sterilization method. The only technological differences are the maximum needle depth setting: the Dr.pen is 0.5 mm than the predicate (2.5 mm); and the penetration depth selection: the Dr.pen has 9 depth settings (0-2.0 mm increments) and the predicate device has 11 depth settings (0-2.5 mm in 0.25 mm increments). These differences are minor and are not significant since both devices recommend the same treatment depth (1.5 mm). There is a small and insignificant difference between the surface area of the hub, however the needle spacing is the same (2 mm) and there is no effect on geometry, puncture pattern, These minor differences do not raise different questions of safety and effectiveness. Further, the results of performance testing support substantial equivalence of the Dr.per on to the predicate device.

2. The results table

3. Judging fuzzy relevance
Fuzzy results trail off in relevance as you scroll. Use three signals to decide how far down to go: the fuzzy badge explanations, the intended use column, and whether your target output (e.g., Cobb angle) still appears in the AI Performance sub-table. Once it stops appearing, you're past the relevant zone. A top hit with a low score (~0.4) and a stretched explanation is a hint the closest predicates are far away — the project may be headed for De Novo. Note the fuzzy search is a pattern match: it doesn't handle negation ("not") well, and hardware devices can appear — filter by SaMD/AI ML to cut them.

4. Device detail page: chat and citations
Click a device name to open its detail page: device facts on the left, a chat window on the right. Ask something like "Describe the training data". The answer carries little citation bubbles — click one to jump to the highlighted passage in the source PDF, so you can verify every AI answer against the document. There's also a Download PDF button for sharing.

5. Side-by-side comparison
Select multiple rows in the results table (aim for under ~10), then open the PDF Viewer tab. Ask one question — it goes to all selected devices in parallel, each with citations. This is the fastest way to compare and contrast devices: training data, PCCP scope, how they handled adding new scanners, and so on.

6. Collections

7. Product codes and the regulations tree
Click a product code in the results to jump to it in the regulations tree — identification text, sibling product codes, and devices you can open in a PDF viewer on the right. Click a regulation number to see its identification, special controls, and related product codes. You can also search by product code or regulation number at the top of the tree. Always read the special controls if any exist for your device — it broadens your search and sharpens pre-kickoff research.

8. Chart view
Click Show Chart and segment by regulation number (or product code) to see which regulations dominate your result set. Clicking a regulation takes you into the regulations tree. Great for spotting that most matches are, say, hardware laparoscopic devices — a cue to go back and filter.

9. The predicate graph
Open the Predicates tab for a family-tree view of predicate relationships. Click a node to trace its parents and children; selections from search carry over pre-selected. 10. Embeddings: the galaxy map
The Embeddings tab plots every matching document in a 2-D "galaxy map" where semantically similar devices cluster together. Hover or click clusters to explore, and let AI label the clusters for you. Embeddings beat product codes for grouping: two devices can carry different product codes (LLZ vs. QIH) yet do the same thing — the embedding captures the meaning of the intended use and device story. This is also exactly how retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) works under the hood, and it makes a great visual on client calls.
