Device Story

SIGNA 7.0T is a high-performance whole-body MRI system; utilizes 7.0T superconducting magnet and high-performance gradient coil (113 mT/m amplitude, 260 T/m/s slew rate). Inputs: RF signals from nuclei in head/extremities. Processing: SIGNA Works suite of applications; utilizes pulse sequences, acceleration methods, and reconstruction algorithms to transform signals into diagnostic images/spectra. Output: Axial, sagittal, coronal, oblique images, spectroscopic images, parametric maps, and spectra. Used in clinical settings by trained physicians/radiologists to assist in diagnosis. Higher field strength (7.0T vs 3.0T) enables higher resolution functional, structural, anatomical, vascular, and spectroscopic imaging compared to lower-field systems. Benefits include improved signal-to-noise ratio and potential for advanced diagnostic detail.

Clinical Evidence

Reader evaluation study performed by 4 U.S. board-certified radiologists comparing images from the 7.0T system and 3.0T predicate. Evaluated brain MR scans (normal and neuropathology) and knee images across a broad age range. Assessed diagnostic quality, usability, and preference. Direct determination study conducted with adult human volunteers to set Peripheral Nerve Stimulation (PNS) limits.

A magnetic resonance diagnostic device is intended for general diagnostic use to present images which reflect the spatial distribution and/or magnetic resonance spectra which reflect frequency and distribution of nuclei exhibiting nuclear magnetic resonance. Other physical parameters derived from the images and/or spectra may also be produced. The device includes hydrogen-1 (proton) imaging, sodium-23 imaging, hydrogen-1 spectroscopy, phosphorus-31 spectroscopy, and chemical shift imaging (preserving simultaneous frequency and spatial information).

Special Controls

*Classification.* Class II (special controls). A magnetic resonance imaging disposable kit intended for use with a magnetic resonance diagnostic device only is exempt from the premarket notification procedures in subpart E of part 807 of this chapter subject to the limitations in § 892.9.
