Intended Use

The Affinity Pixie™ Oxygenator with Balance™ Biosurface is indicated for use for neonate, infant, and small pediatric patients undergoing cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) procedures requiring a blood flow rate up to 2.0 L/min. The Affinity Pixie™ Oxygenator with Balance™ Biosurface is intended to be used in an extracorporeal perfusion circuit to oxygenate and remove carbon dioxide from the blood and to cool or warm the blood during routine CPB procedures up to 6 hours in duration. The Affinity Pixie™ Cardiotomy/Venous Reservoir with Balance™ Biosurface is intended to be used in an extracorporeal perfusion circuit to collect venous and cardiotomy suctioned blood during routine cardiopulmonary procedures up to 6 hours in duration. The CVR is also intended for use during vacuum-assisted venous drainage (VAVD) procedures.

Device Story

Affinity Pixie™ Oxygenator and Cardiotomy/Venous Reservoir (CVR) systems are extracorporeal perfusion components; used in CPB circuits for neonate, infant, and small pediatric patients. Devices oxygenate/remove CO2 from blood; provide thermal regulation (cooling/warming); collect venous/cardiotomy suctioned blood. CVR supports vacuum-assisted venous drainage (VAVD). Systems feature Balance™ Biosurface or Cortiva™ BioActive Surface coatings to improve hemocompatibility. Operated by perfusionists in clinical settings (e.g., OR) during procedures up to 6 hours. Output is processed blood returned to patient; assists clinicians in maintaining physiological support during cardiac surgery.

Clinical Evidence

No clinical data provided; bench testing only.

Technological Characteristics

Extracorporeal oxygenator and reservoir system; includes Balance™ Biosurface or Cortiva™ BioActive Surface coatings. Designed for pediatric/neonate flow rates up to 2.0 L/min. Supports VAVD. Sterile, single-use device.

Indications for Use

Indicated for neonate, infant, and small pediatric patients undergoing cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) procedures requiring blood flow rates up to 2.0 L/min.

Regulatory Classification

Identification

A cardiopulmonary bypass oxygenator is a device used to exchange gases between blood and a gaseous environment to satisfy the gas exchange needs of a patient during open-heart surgery.

Special Controls

*Classification.* Class II (special controls). The special control for this device is the FDA guidance document entitled “Guidance for Cardiopulmonary Bypass Oxygenators 510(k) Submissions.”
