Intended Use
The Libertas™ Hip Replacement System is intended for use in total hip arthroplasty. Total hip arthroplasty is intended to provide patient mobility and reduce pain by replacing the damaged hip joint articulation in patients where there is evidence of sufficient sound bone to fix and support the components. Total hip replacement is indicated for the following conditions: - Non-inflammatory degenerative joint diseases including osteoarthritis and avascular necrosis. - Rheumatoid arthritis. - Congenital hip dysplasia. - Acute traumatic fracture of the femoral head or neck. - Certain cases of Ankylosis. - Dislocation of the hip. - Correction of functional deformity. - Revision of failed joint reconstruction or treatment. - Treatment of nonunion, femoral neck and trochanteric fractures of the proximal femur. NOTE: - The Modular Shell and Uncemented Stem are intended for press-fit, uncemented use only. - The Cemented stem is intended for cemented use only.
Device Story
Libertas Hip Replacement System is a modular hip prosthesis for total hip arthroplasty. Components include acetabular cup system (modular shell, HXLPE liner, CoCr or Biolox delta femoral heads) and femoral stems (uncemented or cemented). Accessories include bone screws, occluders, centralizers, and cement restrictors. Device is used by orthopedic surgeons in clinical settings to replace damaged hip joints, restore mobility, and reduce pain. Surgeons select components based on patient anatomy and bone quality; uncemented components are press-fit, while cemented stems require bone cement. System provides mechanical articulation to replace natural hip joint function.
Clinical Evidence
Bench testing only. Performance evaluated via axial/offset/torque disassembly (ASTM F1820), Ti/HA coating adhesion (ASTM F1044), impingement (ASTM F2582), fretting corrosion (ASTM F1875), axial pull-off (ISO 7206-10), proximal/distal fatigue (ISO 7206-6/4), range of motion (ISO 21535), bone screw mechanical properties (ASTM F543), and Biolox delta head burst/fatigue/torque testing. Endotoxin testing confirmed manufacturing processes do not introduce contaminants.
Technological Characteristics
Modular hip prosthesis. Materials: Cobalt-Chromium alloy, Biolox delta ceramic, HXLPE. Standards: ASTM F1820 (disassembly), ASTM F1044 (coating adhesion), ASTM F2582 (impingement), ASTM F1875 (fretting), ISO 7206 (fatigue/pull-off), ISO 21535 (ROM), ASTM F543 (bone screws). Fixation: Press-fit (uncemented) or cemented. Sterilization method not specified.
Indications for Use
Indicated for patients requiring total hip arthroplasty due to non-inflammatory degenerative joint diseases (osteoarthritis, post-traumatic arthritis, avascular necrosis), rheumatoid arthritis, congenital hip dysplasia, acute traumatic femoral head/neck fracture, ankylosis, hip dislocation, functional deformity, revision of failed reconstruction, or non-union/fractures of the proximal femur, provided sufficient sound bone exists for component fixation.

A hip joint metal/polymer semi-constrained cemented prosthesis is a device intended to be implanted to replace a hip joint. The device limits translation and rotation in one or more planes via the geometry of its articulating surfaces. It has no linkage across-the-joint. This generic type of device includes prostheses that have a femoral component made of alloys, such as cobalt-chromium-molybdenum, and an acetabular resurfacing component made of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene and is limited to those prostheses intended for use with bone cement (§ 888.3027).

We have reviewed your Section 510(k) premarket notification of intent to market the device referenced above and have determined the device is substantially equivalent (for the indications for use stated in the enclosure) to legally marketed predicate devices marketed in interstate commerce prior to May 28, 1976, the enactment date of the Medical Device Amendments, or to devices that have been reclassified in accordance with the provisions of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (Act) that do not require approval of a premarket approval application (PMA). You may, therefore, market the device, subject to the general controls provisions of the Act.
