Intended Use
The Dental High-speed Handpiece Halley Series is intended for the removal of carious material, reducing hard tooth structure, cavity preparation, finishing tooth preparations, restorations, and for polishing teeth. They are designed for use by a trained professional in the field of general dentistry.
Device Story
The Dental High-speed Handpiece Halley Series is a handheld, air-powered dental instrument. It utilizes an internal air-driven turbine (rotor) to achieve high-speed rotation (330,000–390,000 rpm) for dental procedures. The device connects to a dental unit via standardized hose connectors (ISO 9168) to receive drive air, cooling water, and power for illumination (fiber optic models). It features a push-button chuck mechanism for bur retention. Used by trained dental professionals in clinical settings, the device allows for precise removal of tooth structure and restorative materials. The healthcare provider operates the handpiece manually, using the output (rotational energy at the bur) to perform clinical tasks. Benefits include efficient cavity preparation and tooth finishing. The device is constructed primarily of stainless steel.
Clinical Evidence
No clinical data. Substantial equivalence is supported by bench testing and adherence to recognized international standards, including ISO 14457 (handpieces), ISO 10993 (biocompatibility), and electrical safety/EMC standards (IEC 60601-1, IEC 60601-1-2).
Technological Characteristics
Handheld air-powered turbine handpiece. Materials: Stainless steel. Rotation: 330,000–390,000 rpm. Chuck: Push-button. Connectivity: ISO 9168 compliant hose connectors (Types 1, 2, 3). Illumination: Glass rod fiber optics. Standards: ISO 14457, ISO 1797-1, ISO 5349-1, ISO 9168, IEC 62366, ISO 10993-1/5/10, ISO 17664, ISO 17665-1, IEC 60601-1, IEC 60601-1-2, IEC 62471.
Indications for Use
Indicated for trained dental professionals performing removal of carious material, hard tooth structure reduction, cavity/restoration preparation, and tooth polishing.
Regulatory Classification
Identification
A dental handpiece and accessories is an AC-powered, water-powered, air-powered, or belt-driven, hand-held device that may include a foot controller for regulation of speed and direction of rotation or a contra-angle attachment for difficult to reach areas intended to prepare dental cavities for restorations, such as fillings, and for cleaning teeth.
