Intended Use
Hospira Administration Sets are intended for the delivery of fluids from a container to a patient's vascular system. Hospira Administration sets are configured to ensure the intended use of the device is met. The sets are disposable devices for single patient use. Hospira Administration sets are intended for the delivery of fluids, including blood and blood products where indicated, from a container to a patient's vascular system.
Device Story
Hospira Administration Sets (Primary, Extension, Burette, Blood) facilitate fluid delivery from containers to patient vascular systems. Modification adds Nuitiv™ Connector, a luer-activated needleless valve. Device components include tubing, piercing pins, flow control, filters, and various connectors. Used in clinical settings by healthcare providers to manage intravenous therapy. Output is controlled fluid flow to the patient. Benefits include secure, needleless access for fluid/blood administration. Device is disposable and single-use.
Clinical Evidence
Bench testing only. No clinical data. Performance testing included ISO 10993 biological evaluation (hemocompatibility, cytotoxicity, sensitization, irritation, systemic/subacute/subchronic toxicity, pyrogenicity) and mechanical testing per ISO 594-1/2, ISO 8536-4/8, and ISO 1135-4 (leakage, tensile strength, particulate matter, torque, stress cracking).
Technological Characteristics
Materials: Polycarbonate (Makrolon RX1805, Tritan MX731), Silicone (Wacker Elastosil LR3066/55), Silicone lubricant (Med400, Nusil). Luer-activated needleless valve design. Sterilization: SAL 10^-6. Standards: ISO 10993, ISO 594-1/2, ISO 8536-4/8, ISO 1135-4.
Indications for Use
Indicated for delivery of fluids (including blood/blood products) from container to patient vascular system.
Regulatory Classification
Identification
An intravascular administration set is a device used to administer fluids from a container to a patient's vascular system through a needle or catheter inserted into a vein. The device may include the needle or catheter, tubing, a flow regulator, a drip chamber, an infusion line filter, an I.V. set stopcock, fluid delivery tubing, connectors between parts of the set, a side tube with a cap to serve as an injection site, and a hollow spike to penetrate and connect the tubing to an I.V. bag or other infusion fluid container.
Special Controls
*Classification.* Class II (special controls). The special control for pharmacy compounding systems within this classification is the FDA guidance document entitled “Class II Special Controls Guidance Document: Pharmacy Compounding Systems; Final Guidance for Industry and FDA Reviewers.” Pharmacy compounding systems classified within the intravascular administration set are exempt from the premarket notification procedures in subpart E of this part and subject to the limitations in § 880.9.

Dear Mr. Blonski:
We have reviewed your Section 510(k) premarket notification of intent to market the device referenced above and have determined the device is substantially equivalent (for the indications for use stated in the enclosure) to legally marketed predicate devices marketed in interstate commerce prior to May 28, 1976, the enactment date of the Medical Device Amendments, or to devices that have been reclassified in accordance with the provisions of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (Act) that do not require approval of a premarket approval application (PMA). You may, therefore, market the device, subject to the general controls provisions of the Act. The general controls provisions of the Act include requirements for annual registration, listing of devices, good manufacturing practice, labeling, and prohibitions against misbranding and adulteration. Please note: CDRH does not evaluate information related to contract liability warranties. We remind you, however, that device labeling must be truthful and not misleading.
If your device is classified (see above) into either class II (Special Controls) or class III (PMA), it may be subject to additional controls. Existing major regulations affecting your device can be found in the Code of Federal Regulations, Title 21, Parts 800 to 898. In addition, FDA may publish further announcements concerning your device in the Federal Register.
