Intended Use

The SOMATOM Scope and SOMATOM Scope Power are intended to produce cross-sectional images of the body by computer reconstruction of x-ray transmission data from either the same axial plane taken at different angles or spiral planes taken at different angles. (*spiral planes: the axial planes resulted from the continuous rotation of detectors and x-ray tube, and the simultaneous translation of the patient.)

Device Story

Computed tomography (CT) system; utilizes rotating tube-detector assembly; fan beam principle. Inputs: x-ray transmission data. Outputs: cross-sectional images. Used in clinical settings by trained operators (radiologists/technicians). Software (SOMARIS/5 VC30) manages patient data, scan control, image reconstruction, and archiving. Features include iMAR (metal artifact reduction), FAST kV (automated voltage selection), SAFIRE (iterative reconstruction), and various visualization tools (Temporal-MIP, TrueD-4D). Enhances diagnostic workflow through automated positioning, wizard-guided protocols, and dual-energy capabilities. Benefits patients by providing high-quality diagnostic images while optimizing dose and workflow efficiency.

Clinical Evidence

Bench testing only. No clinical data presented. Verification and validation testing conducted per IEC 62304 and other relevant standards confirmed software functionality and performance specifications met acceptance criteria.

Technological Characteristics

CT scanner; fan beam geometry; rotating tube-detector. Software: SOMARIS/5 VC30. Standards: IEC 60601-2-44, IEC 61223-3-5, NEMA XR-25/26/29, IEC 62304, IEC 60601-1, ISO 14971. Connectivity: DICOM. Features: iMAR, SAFIRE, FAST kV, Dual Energy, Interleaved Volume Reconstruction. Moderate level of concern software.

Indications for Use

Indicated for patients requiring cross-sectional body imaging via computer-reconstructed x-ray transmission data, acquired through axial or spiral scanning modes.
