Intended Use
The Discovery XR656 is intended to generate digital radiographic images of the skull, spinal column, chest, abdomen, extremities, and other body parts in patients of all ages. Applications can be performed with the patient sitting, standing, or lying in the prone or supine position and is intended for use in all routine radiography exams. When the VolumeRAD option is included on the system, the system can generate tomographic images of human anatomy including the skull, spinal column, chest, abdomen, extremities, and other body parts in patients of all ages. When the VolumeRAD option is used for patients undergoing thoracic imaging, it is indicated for the detection of lung nodules. VolumeRAD generates diagnostic images of the chest that aid the radiologist in achieving superior detectability of lung nodules versus posterior-anterior and left lateral views of posterior. the chest, at a comparable radiation level. The device is not intended for mammographic applications.
Device Story
Discovery XR656 is a stationary digital radiographic/tomographic X-ray system; utilizes flat-panel wireless digital detector (amorphous silicon/cesium iodide scintillator). System components: wallstand, elevating table, overhead tube support, X-ray tube, collimator, system controller, generator. VolumeRAD feature performs digital tomosynthesis to generate tomographic images. Used in clinical settings by healthcare professionals. Radiologist reviews images via DICOM network for diagnostic assessment; VolumeRAD aids in lung nodule detection by providing superior detectability compared to standard 2D PA/lateral chest X-rays. Benefits include improved diagnostic accuracy for lung nodules at comparable radiation doses.
Clinical Evidence
Multi-centered clinical study compared VolumeRAD to conventional two-view (PA and LAT) chest X-rays for detection of 3-20mm lung nodules. Results demonstrated increased physician accuracy with VolumeRAD at an average effective dose < 0.1 mSv.
Technological Characteristics
Stationary X-ray system; flat-panel wireless digital detector (amorphous silicon, cesium iodide scintillator). Complies with 21 CFR X-ray requirements, IEC 60601-1 safety standards. Connectivity via DICOM network. No changes to design, materials, or energy source from predicate.
Indications for Use
Indicated for digital radiographic and tomographic imaging of skull, spine, chest, abdomen, and extremities in patients of all ages. Specifically indicated for detection of lung nodules in thoracic imaging. Contraindicated for mammography.
Regulatory Classification
Identification
A tomographic x-ray system is an x-ray device intended to be used to produce radiologic images of a specific cross-sectional plane of the body by blurring or eliminating detail from other planes. This generic type of device may include signal analysis and display equipment, patient and equipment supports, component parts, and accessories.
