Intended Use

The CONSERVE® Thin Shells are intended for use in total hip arthroplasty for reduction or relief of pain and/or improved hip function in skeletally mature patients. The CONSERVE® Thin Shell is intended for cementless hip arthroplasty.

Device Story

CONSERVE® Thin Shell is a monoblock acetabular cup for cementless total hip arthroplasty; used to reduce pain and improve hip function in skeletally mature patients. Device is manufactured from CoCr alloy with a CoCr porous bead coating. Available in 12 sizes. Implanted by orthopedic surgeons in a clinical/surgical setting. Device functions as a prosthetic component to replace the acetabulum. Clinical benefit derived from restoration of hip joint function and pain relief. Subject device is a modification of previously cleared shells, specifically removing the HA coating. Performance evaluated via post-impaction analysis of clearance, form, and frictional torque.

Clinical Evidence

Bench testing only. Evaluation included post-impaction analysis of clearance, form, and frictional torque to confirm equivalence to predicate devices.

Technological Characteristics

Monoblock acetabular cup; CoCr alloy with CoCr porous bead coating; 12 sizes; cementless fixation; non-modular; no HA coating.

Indications for Use

Indicated for skeletally mature patients requiring total hip arthroplasty for non-inflammatory degenerative joint disease (osteoarthritis, avascular necrosis, ankylosis, protrusio acetabuli, painful hip dysplasia), inflammatory degenerative joint disease (rheumatoid arthritis), correction of functional deformity, or revision procedures where other treatments have failed.

Regulatory Classification

Identification

A hip joint metal/metal semi-constrained, with an uncemented acetabular component, prosthesis is a two-part device intended to be implanted to replace a hip joint. The device limits translation and rotation in one or more planes via the geometry of its articulating surfaces. It has no linkage across-the-joint. This generic type of device includes prostheses that consist of a femoral and an acetabular component, both made of alloys, such as cobalt-chromium-molybdenum. The femoral component is intended to be fixed with bone cement. The acetabular component is intended for use without bone cement (§ 888.3027).
