Intended Use

The OmniPod Insulin Management System is intended for subcutaneous delivery of insulin at set and variable rates for the management of diabetes mellitus in persons requiring insulin and for the quantitative measurement of glucose in fresh whole capillary blood (in vitro) from the finger. The glucose measurements should not be used for the diagnosis of or screening for diabetes. The PDM glucose meter is intended for single-patient use and should not be shared. Abbott FreeStyle test strips are used with the built in FreeStyle meter for the quantitative measurement of blood glucose in fresh whole capillary blood from the finger, upper arm and palm. Abbott FreeStyle Control Solutions are used to verify that the meter and test strips are working together properly and that the test is performed correctly.

Device Story

OmniPod Insulin Management System consists of a Personal Diabetes Manager (PDM) and a disposable Pod. PDM acts as the controller; user inputs insulin profiles, checks status, and initiates bolus doses via PDM interface. PDM integrates a FreeStyle glucose meter; receives blood glucose readings via internal serial interface; stores and displays data. Pod is filled with U-100 rapid-acting insulin (Novolog/NovoRapid, Humalog, or Apidra); adheres to patient skin; uses automated needle/cannula deployment for subcutaneous delivery. Once initiated, Pod operates independently of PDM. System used by patients for diabetes management; provides automated insulin delivery and glucose monitoring to assist in glycemic control.

Clinical Evidence

Bench testing included verification of meter functionality per ISO 15917:2003, cleaning/disinfection validation, software verification, EMC testing (60601-1-2), and hardware verification. Clinical evaluation involved 75 subjects at two sites comparing subject-measured capillary blood glucose against YSI 2300 Stat Plus reference device. Subjects also provided usability feedback.

Technological Characteristics

System comprises PDM and disposable Pod. PDM features color LCD, USB port, and integrated FreeStyle glucose meter. Pod is a wearable, adhesive-backed pump for subcutaneous insulin delivery. Connectivity via internal serial interface between meter and PDM. Software performs insulin profile management and glucose data processing. Sterilization and material specs not detailed beyond general device description.
