Intended Use

The Braun Thermoscan® IRT 4000 series and Braun Thermoscan® PRO 4000 series Clinical Infrared Ear Thermometers is indicated for the intermittent measurement and monitoring of human body temperature by consumers of all ages in a home use/professional use environment respectively. The probe cover is used as a sanitary barrier between the infra-red thermometer and the ear canal.

Device Story

Handheld infrared ear thermometer; measures thermal radiation emitted from tympanic membrane and adjacent surfaces. Device features a heated probe tip to reduce temperature gradients between ambient room air and human body; improves measurement repeatability. Thermopile sensor detects infrared radiation; internal sensor measures ambient temperature. Microprocessor receives voltage signals from sensors; applies algorithm to compensate for positional feedback, temperature gradients, and clinical offsets. Output is a core body temperature reading. Used by clinicians in hospitals/offices or by consumers at home. Probe covers serve as sanitary barriers to prevent transfer of ear secretions/particulates. Device provides accurate, repeatable temperature monitoring.

Clinical Evidence

Bench testing only. Statistical equivalence between thermometers manufactured at the new site and the predicate was established using the Blackwelder method. Readings were taken using a blackbody reference across 5 combinations of devices. 95% confidence intervals for the difference in bias and standard deviation between the two populations met pre-defined acceptance criteria (delta ± 0.04). No clinical or biocompatibility testing was required as materials and design remained unchanged.
