Intended Use

The reprocessed EP diagnostic catheters are intended for temporary use during electrophysiology studies for intracardiac sensing, recording, cardiac stimulation, and for the electrophysiological mapping and evaluation of cardiac structures and arrhythmias.

Device Story

Reprocessed electrophysiology (EP) diagnostic catheters; consist of shaft with proximal handle; some models steerable. Feature platinum, radiopaque electrodes with varying spacing and curve styles at distal tip. Cables connect handle to external stimulator/electrophysiological recorder. Used in clinical electrophysiology studies; operated by physicians. Device inputs are cardiac electrical signals; outputs are electrical signals transmitted to external recording/stimulation equipment. Facilitates mapping and evaluation of cardiac structures and arrhythmias; aids clinical decision-making regarding cardiac rhythm management. Benefits patient through diagnostic assessment of cardiac electrical activity.

Clinical Evidence

Bench testing only. Testing included cleaning validation, sterilization validation (ISO 11135, USP <71>), biocompatibility (ISO 10993-1), ethylene oxide residuals (ISO 10993-7), packaging validation (ASTM D4169, F88, F1929, F2096), and shelf life (ASTM 1980-99). Functional bench testing included electrical leakage, torsional strength, flexation fatigue, fluid integrity, joint bond strength, deflection fatigue, catheter stiffness, and tip buckling.

Technological Characteristics

Catheter shaft with proximal handle; platinum, radiopaque electrodes. Materials and construction methods identical to predicate. Connectivity via cables to external stimulator/recorder. Sterilization via ethylene oxide. No software or algorithm components.

Indications for Use

Indicated for temporary use during electrophysiology studies for intracardiac sensing, cardiac stimulation, and electrophysiological mapping and evaluation of cardiac structures and arrhythmias.

Regulatory Classification

Identification

An electrode recording catheter or an electrode recording probe is a device used to detect an intracardiac electrocardiogram, or to detect cardiac output or left-to-right heart shunts. The device may be unipolar or multipolar for electrocardiogram detection, or may be a platinum-tipped catheter which senses the presence of a special indicator for cardiac output or left-to-right heart shunt determinations.
