Intended Use

ChitoGauze™ is intended to be a hemostatic wound dressing. ChitoGauze is a hemostatic dressing for the external, temporary control of severely bleeding wounds. ChitoGauze is intended for temporary external use to stop bleeding of minor wounds, minor cuts and minor abrasions.

Device Story

ChitoGauze is a hemostatic wound dressing consisting of a polyester/rayon non-woven gauze coated with chitosan. The device is applied topically to bleeding wounds by clinicians or lay users. Chitosan acts as a hemostatic agent to accelerate bleeding control. The dressing is z-folded, packaged in a foil pouch, and terminally sterilized via gamma irradiation. It is intended for temporary use to manage hemorrhage in trauma or minor wound settings. The device provides a physical barrier and hemostatic support to facilitate clot formation, potentially reducing blood loss and improving patient outcomes in acute bleeding scenarios.

Clinical Evidence

No clinical data was required for evaluation of this device. Non-clinical evidence includes biocompatibility testing per ISO 10993, in vivo efficacy testing in an extreme trauma model compared to lap sponges and uncoated/coated gauze, and in vitro antimicrobial reduction testing against 26 microorganism species.

Technological Characteristics

Polyester/rayon non-woven medical gauze coated with chitosan. Dimensions: 4 inches by 4 yards. Sterilization: Gamma irradiation to SAL 10^-6 per ISO 11137:2006 (VDmax method).

Indications for Use

Indicated for external, temporary control of severely bleeding wounds (Rx) or minor wounds, cuts, and abrasions (OTC).

Regulatory Classification

Identification

To temporarily control bleeding and cover external wounds.
