Indications for Use
MR-Touch™ is a software and hardware option intended for use with GE Signa® MR systems. It is indicated for magnetic resonance imaging of the human body. MR-Touch™ generates transverse sectional information related to the relative stiffness of soft tissue. It consists of hardware as well as acquisition and reconstruction software components induce vibrations into the scan subject. The MR-Touch™ acquisition software is an evolutionary improvement to the gradient echo sequence. The sequence synchronizes the induced vibrations to acquire a series of phase-contrast images over time. The phase-contrast imaging technique measures motion or displacement. The displacement from the induced vibrations is detected using the time-series of phase-contrast images. The displacement information is reconstructed and presented as strain wave and relative stiffness images. When used with a GE Signa® MR system, MR-Touch™ is capable of producing transverse images of internal body structures such as muscle and liver. When interpreted by a trained physician, these images may provide information that can be useful in determining a diagnosis.
Device Story
MR-Touch™ is a hardware/software accessory for GE Signa® MR systems. Hardware includes an acoustic wave generator and passive transducer connected by flexible tubing to induce low-frequency, low-magnitude vibrations in the patient. Software includes a modified gradient echo sequence that synchronizes these vibrations with phase-contrast image acquisition. The system measures tissue displacement over time; reconstruction algorithms process this displacement data into strain wave and relative stiffness images (Elastograms). Used in clinical settings by trained physicians to visualize internal structures like muscle and liver. Output assists clinicians in differentiating tissues based on stiffness, potentially aiding diagnostic decision-making.
Clinical Evidence
Bench testing only. Verification confirmed functionality with GE Signa® HDx MR System. Confidence studies demonstrated repeatable results and the ability to reliably differentiate between tissues of varying stiffness. Hardware evaluated for safety and electromagnetic compatibility per IEC 60601-1 and IEC 60601-1-2 standards.

A magnetic resonance diagnostic device is intended for general diagnostic use to present images which reflect the spatial distribution and/or magnetic resonance spectra which reflect frequency and distribution of nuclei exhibiting nuclear magnetic resonance. Other physical parameters derived from the images and/or spectra may also be produced. The device includes hydrogen-1 (proton) imaging, sodium-23 imaging, hydrogen-1 spectroscopy, phosphorus-31 spectroscopy, and chemical shift imaging (preserving simultaneous frequency and spatial information).
Special Controls
*Classification.* Class II (special controls). A magnetic resonance imaging disposable kit intended for use with a magnetic resonance diagnostic device only is exempt from the premarket notification procedures in subpart E of part 807 of this chapter subject to the limitations in § 892.9.
