Intended Use
The Synthes (USA) Sternum Fixation System is intended for use in primary or secondary closure/repair of the sternum following sternotomy or fracture of the sternum to stabilize the sternum and promote fusion.
Device Story
Sternal fixation system consisting of machined titanium plates, quick-release pins, and 3.0 mm locking screws. Used by surgeons in clinical settings to stabilize the sternum post-sternotomy or following fracture. Plates are secured to the bone via locking screws to create a rigid construct, promoting fusion and healing. Device is a line extension of existing Synthes sternal fixation products.
Clinical Evidence
No clinical data provided; substantial equivalence based on design and material characteristics.
Technological Characteristics
Machined titanium plates, quick-release pins, and 3.0 mm locking screws. Mechanical fixation system.
Indications for Use
Indicated for patients requiring primary or secondary sternal closure or repair following sternotomy or sternal fracture to provide stabilization and promote bone fusion.
Regulatory Classification
Identification
A smooth or threaded metallic bone fixation fastener is a device intended to be implanted that consists of a stiff wire segment or rod made of alloys, such as cobalt-chromium-molybdenum and stainless steel, and that may be smooth on the outside, fully or partially threaded, straight or U-shaped; and may be either blunt pointed, sharp pointed, or have a formed, slotted head on the end. It may be used for fixation of bone fractures, for bone reconstructions, as a guide pin for insertion of other implants, or it may be implanted through the skin so that a pulling force (traction) may be applied to the skeletal system.
