Intended Use
The SPECTRA-LOR, Loss of Resistance Syringe is intended for use, in conjunction with an epidural needle, to verify the needle tip placement is in the epidural space by use of the Loss of Resistance Technique as detailed in medical textbooks and medical journal articles. The LOR Syringe is not intended for injection or aspiration.
Device Story
SPECTRA-LOR is a manual piston syringe used by clinicians during epidural procedures. Device consists of barrel, plunger, and bung; available in 10 ml capacity with Luer Lock or Luer Slip tip. Operates via Loss of Resistance (LOR) technique: clinician advances epidural needle while applying pressure to syringe plunger; sudden decrease in resistance indicates needle tip has entered epidural space. Device provides tactile feedback to clinician to confirm correct needle placement. Not intended for injection or aspiration. Benefits include assisting in accurate epidural space identification.
Clinical Evidence
Bench testing only.
Technological Characteristics
Piston syringe design; 10 ml capacity; Luer Lock or Luer Slip tip. Materials of construction are equivalent to predicate. Manual operation; no energy source. Non-sterile/sterile status not specified, but standard syringe construction.
Indications for Use
Indicated for use in conjunction with an epidural needle to verify needle tip placement in the epidural space via the Loss of Resistance technique. Not for injection or aspiration. Prescription use only.
Regulatory Classification
Identification
A piston syringe is a device intended for medical purposes that consists of a calibrated hollow barrel and a movable plunger. At one end of the barrel there is a male connector (nozzle) for fitting the female connector (hub) of a hypodermic single lumen needle. The device is used to inject fluids into, or withdraw fluids from, the body.

Dear Mr. Henderson:
We have reviewed your Section 510(k) premarket notification of intent to market the device referenced above and have determined the device is substantially equivalent (for the indications for use stated in the enclosure) to legally marketed predicate devices marketed in interstate commerce prior to May 28, 1976, the enactment date of the Medical Device Amendments, or to devices that have been reclassified in accordance with the provisions of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (Act) that do not require approval of a premarket approval application (PMA). You may, therefore, market the device, subject to the general controls provisions of the Act. The general controls provisions of the Act include requirements for annual registration, listing of devices, good manufacturing practice, labeling, and prohibitions against misbranding and adulteration.
If your device is classified (see above) into either class II (Special Controls) or class III (PMA), it may be subject to such additional controls. Existing major regulations affecting your device can be found in the Code of Federal Regulations, Title 21, Parts 800 to 898. In addition, FDA may publish further announcements concerning your device in the Federal Register.
