Intended Use

The Kyphon Discyphor Direct™ Catheter System for the Functional Anaesthetic Discography™ Procedure, and its components, are intended for use in delivering either a single dose or continuous administration of radiopaque contrast, local anaesthetics, and/or saline solution to the intradiscal space. The Kyphon Discyphor Direct™ Outer Needle is intended for use to access the area adjacent to the intradiscal space for the purpose of facilitating sequential placement of the Discyphor Direct™ Inner Needle and Discyphor Direct™ Catheter into the intradiscal space. The Discyphor Direct™ Outer Needle is intended to be used only with the Discyphor Direct™ Catheter System. The Kyphon Discyphor Direct™ Inner Needle is intended to access the nucleus of an intervertebral disc for the purpose of performing provocative discography and facilitating placement of the Discyphor Direct™ Catheter into the intradiscal space. The Discyphor Direct™ Inner Needle can be used to deliver contrast, antibiotic, and/or saline into an intervertebral disc. The Discyphor Direct™ Inner Needle is intended to be used only with the Discyphor Direct™ Catheter System.

Device Story

System includes micro-catheter with inflatable distal balloon, outer/inner needles, balloon inflation assembly, stopcock, injection assembly, and anchoring device. Used by clinicians to access intradiscal space for provocative discography and delivery of contrast, anesthetics, antibiotics, or saline. Outer needle accesses area adjacent to disc; inner needle accesses nucleus; catheter is then placed. Balloon inflation assembly (syringe/relief valve) and injection assemblies connect to catheter lumens. Anchoring device secures catheter at puncture site; adhesive clips secure catheter to patient. System facilitates diagnostic discography procedures; provides controlled delivery of fluids to intervertebral disc.

Clinical Evidence

No clinical data. Bench testing only, including dimensional verification, tensile testing, bending stiffness, corrosion verification, fatigue testing, functional testing, handling, biocompatibility, and sterilization validation.

Technological Characteristics

Stainless steel needles with polycarbonate wings; micro-catheter with double lumen shaft and inflatable distal balloon. Components include stopcocks, Touhy Borst adapters, and syringes. Single-use, sterile. No electronic or software components.

Indications for Use

Indicated for patients undergoing provocative discography or requiring administration of contrast, local anesthetics, antibiotics, or saline into the intradiscal space. Used for accessing the intervertebral disc nucleus and facilitating catheter placement.

Regulatory Classification

Identification

An anesthesia conduction needle is a device used to inject local anesthetics into a patient to provide regional anesthesia.
