Device Story

REALIZE™ Gastric Calibration Tube is a single-patient-use instrument for gastric/bariatric surgery. Device consists of 745 mm silicone tube with 38 F rounded, closed tip; includes inflatable balloon located 6.8 cm from distal tip and two suction/irrigation holes at distal end. Proximal end features check valve for syringe-based balloon inflation. Reference markings on shaft assist in positioning. Used by surgeons in OR to provide visible/tactile delineation of stomach antrum, decompress stomach, remove gastric fluid, and size gastric pouch. Device functions as mechanical aid during surgical procedures; no electronic or software components.

A gastrointestinal tube and accessories is a device that consists of flexible or semi-rigid tubing used for instilling fluids into, withdrawing fluids from, splinting, or suppressing bleeding of the alimentary tract. This device may incorporate an integral inflatable balloon for retention or hemostasis. This generic type of device includes the hemostatic bag, irrigation and aspiration catheter (gastric, colonic, etc.), rectal catheter, sterile infant gavage set, gastrointestinal string and tubes to locate internal bleeding, double lumen tube for intestinal decompression or intubation, feeding tube, gastroenterostomy tube, Levine tube, nasogastric tube, single lumen tube with mercury weight balloon for intestinal intubation or decompression, and gastro-urological irrigation tray (for gastrological use).

Special Controls

*Classification.* (1) Class II (special controls). The barium enema retention catheter and tip with or without a bag that is a gastrointestinal tube and accessory or a gastronomy tube holder accessory is exempt from the premarket notification procedures in subpart E of part 807 of this chapter subject to the limitations in § 876.9.(2) Class I (general controls) for the dissolvable nasogastric feed tube guide for the nasogastric tube. The class I device is exempt from the premarket notification procedures in subpart E of part 807 of this chapter subject to § 876.9.

Indications for Use The gastric calibration tube is indicated for use in gastric and bariatric surgical procedures to provide visible and tactile delineation of the antrum of the stomach along with the ability to decompress the stomach, drain and remove gastric fluid and size a gastric pouch. Technological Characteristics The REALIZE™ Gastric Calibration Tube is similar to the design, function and materials of the predicate devices BioEnterics® Gastric Balloon Suction Catheter and COOK Gastric Sizing Balloon Catheter. The REALIZE™ Gastric Calibration Tube has the same indications for use as the predicates. Performance Data Bench testing was performed to evaluate the performance of the intended use of the new device.
