Intended Use

aycan Workstation OsiriX is a software device intended for viewing of images acquired from CT, MR, CR, DR, US and other DICOM compliant medical imaging systems when installed on suitable commercial standard hardware. Images and data can be captured, stored, communicated, processed, and displayed within the system and or across computer networks at distributed locations. Lossy compressed mammographic images and digitized film screen images must not be reviewed for primary diagnosis or image interpretation. For primary diagnosis, post process DICOM "for presentation" images must be used. Mammographic images should only be viewed with a monitor approved by FDA for viewing mammographic images. It is the User's responsibility to ensure monitor quality, ambient light conditions, and image compression ratios are consistent with clinical application.

Device Story

Software-based PACS workstation; runs on Apple Mac OSX; processes DICOM-compliant medical images (CT, MR, CR, DR, US). Enables capture, storage, communication, processing, and display of multidimensional/multimodality images across networks. Operated by clinicians in clinical settings; provides high-performance review, navigation, and post-processing tools. Physician interprets displayed images; device does not contact patient or control life-sustaining equipment. Output supports clinical decision-making by facilitating diagnostic review. Benefits include efficient image management and visualization.

Clinical Evidence

Bench testing only. Verification and validation activities performed per risk analysis; system passed all testing criteria. No clinical data presented.

Technological Characteristics

Software-based PACS; runs on Apple Mac OSX hardware. Conforms to DICOM 3.0 standards for image communication. Provides multidimensional/multimodality image processing and review. No patient contact. Hazard analysis classified as 'Minor' level of concern.

Indications for Use

Indicated for viewing medical images (CT, MR, CR, DR, US) from DICOM-compliant systems. Intended for use by clinicians for image review and post-processing. Contraindicated for primary diagnosis using lossy compressed mammographic images or digitized film screen images.

Regulatory Classification

Identification

A medical image management and processing system is a device that provides one or more capabilities relating to the review and digital processing of medical images for the purposes of interpretation by a trained practitioner of disease detection, diagnosis, or patient management. The software components may provide advanced or complex image processing functions for image manipulation, enhancement, or quantification that are intended for use in the interpretation and analysis of medical images. Advanced image manipulation functions may include image segmentation, multimodality image registration, or 3D visualization. Complex quantitative functions may include semi-automated measurements or time-series measurements.

Special Controls

*Classification.* Class II (special controls; voluntary standards—Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) Std., Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG) Std., Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) Test Pattern).
