Intended Use

PRO OSTEON® 500R Resorbable Bone Graft Substitute is indicated only for bony voids or gaps that are not intrinsic to the stability of the bony structure. PRO OSTEON® 500R is indicated to be gently packed into bony volds or gaps of the skeletal system (i.e., the extremities, spine and pelvis). These defects may be surgically created osseous defects or osseous defects created from traumatic injury to the bone. PRO OSTEON® 500R can be combined with autogenous bone marrow aspirate, autogenous blood, and/or sterile fluids (saline or Ringer's solution). The product provides a bone void filler that resorbs and is replaced with bone during the healing process.

Device Story

Pro Osteon® 500R is an osteoconductive, porous, resorbable bone graft substitute mimicking human cancellous bone structure. Supplied sterile in various shapes/sizes; intended for surgical implantation. Device is packed into non-structural bony voids or gaps in extremities, spine, or pelvis. May be combined with autogenous bone marrow aspirate, blood, or sterile fluids (saline/Ringer's). Upon placement, reticulated spaces infiltrate with tissue; bone forms in apposition to implant surface and within interstices. As implant resorbs, new bone and soft tissue replace the scaffold, facilitating healing. Used by surgeons in clinical settings.

Clinical Evidence

No clinical data provided. Substantial equivalence based on non-clinical laboratory testing confirming device functionality within its intended use.

Technological Characteristics

Osteoconductive porous implant; structure mimics human cancellous bone. Material is a calcium compound bone void filler. Supplied sterile. No electronic or software components.

Indications for Use

Indicated for patients with bony voids or gaps in the skeletal system (extremities, spine, pelvis) not intrinsic to structural stability. Defects may be surgically created or traumatic in origin. Contraindicated for use in load-bearing applications.

Regulatory Classification

Identification

A resorbable calcium salt bone void filler device is a resorbable implant intended to fill bony voids or gaps of the extremities, spine, and pelvis that are caused by trauma or surgery and are not intrinsic to the stability of the bony structure.

Special Controls

*Classification.* Class II (special controls). The special control for this device is the FDA guidance document entitled “Class II Special Controls Guidance: Resorbable Calcium Salt Bone Void Filler Device; Guidance for Industry and FDA.” See § 888.1(e) of this chapter for the availability of this guidance.

It is supplied sterile in various shapes and sizes. When Pro Osteon® 500R is placed in direct contact with viable bone, the reticulated spaces in the implant are infiltrated with tissue. Bone formation occurs in apposition to the Pro Osteon® 500R surface and within the interstices of the implant skeleton. As the implant resorbs, bone and soft tissue grow into the space previously occupied by the implant.
