Intended Use

The HEMOCHRON® Signature Elite™ Whole Blood Microcoagulation System is a battery-operated, hand-held instrument that performs individual point-of-care coagulation tests on fresh or citrated whole blood. The system is intended to be used with test cuvettes that are available from ITC. For in vitro Diagnostic Use.

Device Story

Battery-operated, hand-held point-of-care instrument for quantitative coagulation testing (ACT, APTT, PT). Input: fresh or citrated whole blood sample placed in single-use disposable cuvette. Operation: instrument warms cuvette; mechanical-optical system pumps blood back and forth in test channel; LED detectors monitor blood movement; clotting endpoint recorded when movement decreases below threshold. Output: clotting time (seconds), correlated plasma equivalent values, and INR displayed on LCD. Features barcode scanner for patient/operator ID and assay parameter entry; stores up to 600 patient/QC results. Used by clinicians in point-of-care settings. Data management via PC connectivity (Configuration Manager, Report Maker, idms software). Benefits: rapid, bedside coagulation monitoring for clinical decision-making.

Clinical Evidence

No new clinical data provided. Analytical performance (accuracy, precision, linearity, carryover, interfering substances) relies on data previously cleared for the predicate device (K020798).

Technological Characteristics

Battery/AC-operated hand-held instrument. Mechanical-optical clot detection using LED sensors. Disposable test cuvettes. Connectivity: RS-232 and external ports. Software: Microsoft Windows-based configuration and reporting tools. Complies with IEC 60825-1 (laser safety), ISO 14971 (risk management), and ISO 9001/13485 (design verification).

Indications for Use

Indicated for use in clinical settings requiring point-of-care coagulation testing on fresh or citrated whole blood. Provides clotting times (seconds), Celite® equivalent ACT, APTT/PT plasma equivalents, and PT INR.

Regulatory Classification

Identification

A multipurpose system for in vitro coagulation studies is a device consisting of one automated or semiautomated instrument and its associated reagents and controls. The system is used to perform a series of coagulation studies and coagulation factor assays.

Special Controls

*Classification.* Class II (special controls). A control intended for use with a multipurpose system for in vitro coagulation studies is exempt from the premarket notification procedures in subpart E of part 807 of this chapter subject to the limitations in § 864.9.
