Intended Use

The Alpha 5000 Wrist Coil is a receive-only quadrature RF coil, used for obtaining diagnostic images of the wrist and hand in Magnetic Resonance Imaging Systems. The Alpha 5000 Wrist Coil is designed for use with the Toshiba OPART 0.35T MRI system manufactured by Toshiba Medical Systems, Inc. The indications for use are the same as for standard MR Imaging.

Device Story

Alpha 5000 Wrist Coil is a two-element quadrature receive-only RF coil; designed for wrist and hand MRI. Device inputs are magnetic resonance signals; transforms these into diagnostic images via integration with Toshiba OPART 0.35T MRI system. Rigid, fire-rated plastic housing with open windows for patient comfort and positioning. Operated by MRI technicians/radiologists in clinical imaging settings. Coil does not transmit RF power; uses switching diode decoupling to isolate elements from RF fields during transmission, preventing RF burns and resonant loop formation. Output is diagnostic image data for physician interpretation; aids in clinical diagnosis of soft tissue structures.

Clinical Evidence

Bench testing only. No clinical data provided. Safety and effectiveness established through comparison of design, materials, and functional characteristics to predicate devices.

Technological Characteristics

Two-element quadrature receive-only RF coil. Materials: Flame retardant polyurethane, flame retardant polycarbonate, Kydex acrylic/PVC, Delrin. Decoupling: Switching diode. Form factor: Rigid enclosure with open windows. Energy: Passive receive-only (no RF transmission). Connectivity: Dedicated to Toshiba OPART 0.35T MRI system.

Indications for Use

Indicated for patients requiring diagnostic MRI of the hand and wrist. Used with Toshiba OPART 0.35T MR scanner to produce images of proton density, T1, and T2 relaxation times for soft tissue structure visualization. Prescription use only.

Regulatory Classification

Identification

A magnetic resonance diagnostic device is intended for general diagnostic use to present images which reflect the spatial distribution and/or magnetic resonance spectra which reflect frequency and distribution of nuclei exhibiting nuclear magnetic resonance. Other physical parameters derived from the images and/or spectra may also be produced. The device includes hydrogen-1 (proton) imaging, sodium-23 imaging, hydrogen-1 spectroscopy, phosphorus-31 spectroscopy, and chemical shift imaging (preserving simultaneous frequency and spatial information).

Special Controls

*Classification.* Class II (special controls). A magnetic resonance imaging disposable kit intended for use with a magnetic resonance diagnostic device only is exempt from the premarket notification procedures in subpart E of part 807 of this chapter subject to the limitations in § 892.9.
