Intended Use

The Nuvo 9000 Endocavitary Coils are three separate receive-only coils used to obtain diagnostic images of the anus, prostate, and cervix. The coils are designed to be inserted into either the rectum or vagina before imaging. The coils are delivered in a sterile state and are disposable, single-use devices. The indications for use are the same as for standard MR Imaging. The Nuvo 9000 Endocavitary Coils are designed for use with MRI Scanners manufactured by Marconi Medical Systems, Inc. and GE Medical Systems, Inc.

Device Story

Nuvo 9000 Endocavitary Coils comprise three disposable, receive-only MRI probes (prostate, cervical, anal) designed for endocavitary insertion (rectum or vagina). Coils improve signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and image resolution compared to standard external coils. System includes rigid plastic housing, interface cable, and external immobilization device to stabilize position and enhance patient comfort. Operated by MRI technicians/physicians in clinical imaging settings. Coils connect to MRI scanners (Marconi/GE) to capture RF signals; decoupling achieved via RF chokes and switching diodes to prevent RF burns and resonant loops. Output is diagnostic MR images interpreted by physicians to aid clinical diagnosis.

Clinical Evidence

Bench testing only. No clinical data provided. Safety and effectiveness are supported by comparative analysis of design, materials (GE Cycolac ABS, Sylvan Technologies PVC), and functional characteristics (decoupling, RF safety) against legally marketed predicate devices.

Technological Characteristics

Receive-only MRI coils; three variants (prostate, cervical, anal). Materials: GE Cycolac ABS, Sylvan Technologies PVC. Decoupling: RF chokes with switching diodes. Form factor: Rigid plastic housing with cable and external immobilization device. Connectivity: Wired interface to MRI scanner. Sterilization: Sterile, single-use disposable.

Indications for Use

Indicated for diagnostic imaging of the anus, prostate, and cervix in patients undergoing MRI. Used with Marconi and GE MRI scanners to produce images of soft tissue structure based on proton density, T1, and T2 parameters to assist physician diagnosis.

Regulatory Classification

Identification

A magnetic resonance diagnostic device is intended for general diagnostic use to present images which reflect the spatial distribution and/or magnetic resonance spectra which reflect frequency and distribution of nuclei exhibiting nuclear magnetic resonance. Other physical parameters derived from the images and/or spectra may also be produced. The device includes hydrogen-1 (proton) imaging, sodium-23 imaging, hydrogen-1 spectroscopy, phosphorus-31 spectroscopy, and chemical shift imaging (preserving simultaneous frequency and spatial information).

Special Controls

*Classification.* Class II (special controls). A magnetic resonance imaging disposable kit intended for use with a magnetic resonance diagnostic device only is exempt from the premarket notification procedures in subpart E of part 807 of this chapter subject to the limitations in § 892.9.
